Attention, ocean enthusiasts and eco-warriors! Avila Beach is calling, and it’s not just for a relaxing day at the shore. This World Oceans Day, on Saturday, June 8th, join the Environmental Center of San Luis Obispo (ECOSLO), Revive Dive, and the Central Coast Aquarium for a morning of meaningful action – a beach cleanup aimed at protecting the very environment we cherish.
Celebrate and Serve: Why You Should Be There
World Oceans Day is a global celebration of the ocean’s vast resources and its importance to our planet. But beyond the festivities, it’s a day to acknowledge the threats our oceans face and take action. This cleanup event offers the perfect opportunity to combine celebration with service, making a real difference in the health of the Pacific Ocean.
A Collaborative Effort for a Cleaner Coast
ECOSLO, a non-profit organization dedicated to environmental conservation in San Luis Obispo County, is leading the charge. Joining forces with Revive Dive, a company specializing in underwater cleanups, and the Central Coast Aquarium, a local treasure trove of marine life education, this event promises a comprehensive approach to cleaning Avila Beach.
Volunteer on Land or Take the Plunge Underwater!
Whether you prefer to get your hands dirty on the beach or explore the underwater realm, there’s a role for you in this cleanup. ECOSLO will be coordinating efforts on land, collecting trash and debris that washes ashore. For those with a scuba certification and a passion for diving, Revive Dive is offering a separate underwater cleanup opportunity (registration required).
The Details: What to Expect and How to Prepare
The fun kicks off at 9:00 AM at the Avila Beach Community Park. The cleanup will continue for two hours, with volunteers working together to rid the beach of litter and debris. But the event doesn’t stop there! At 11:30 AM, head over to the Central Coast Aquarium for some post-cleanup festivities, including food and games – a perfect way to unwind and celebrate your contribution to a cleaner ocean.
To ensure a smooth and safe cleanup, ECOSLO has you covered. They’ll provide cleanup buckets, litter grabbers, and reusable gloves. However, you’re welcome to bring your gloves if you prefer a familiar pair. Sun protection is also crucial, so don’t forget your hat, sunscreen, and a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated under the California sun. Since closed-toe shoes are mandatory for this cleanup, comfortable footwear is a must!
